Sandra Bowkett's work
I am drawn to the sculptural and functional objects of many cultures from the refined fine bone china and porcelain of Europe to the bold lowfired utilitarian forms of India and Africa. In my ceramic practice this diversity is apparent as I move between the two streams of my work. One direction is the thrown mid-fired tableware usually decorated with coloured slips and decals. I enjoy the challenge of combining form, colour and imagery in finding an aesthetic solution that creates an object that can be joyfully used. Decals provide a dimension where images can be ‘played’ with before committing to the fire. The other direction is minimal forms, sometimes handformed, sometimes simply decorated with earth pigments.
The culture of practicality drives me to make functional objects.
